Artist's Statement

I was romanced by art from an early age, but the natural sciences presented tough competition for my choice of vocation. I eventually found myself making art by utilizing reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals that Iıd collected and processed. Recently, I have fallen into using earth as my medium; sand, loam, dirt, clay, volcanic material. The colors, textures and patterns that emerge in my work are plagiarized from the natural world. Our attachment to the ground we stand on is a universal story, one that repeats itself in every place and in every culture. Jacquetta Hawkes, an early 20th-century writer, wrote, "The history of the Earthıs crust has a rhythm. If the movement could be speeded up we should see a rise and fall as though breathing". We are of the Earth and separate from it only by illusion, yet we humans seem to somehow isolate ourselves from the rest of life. The understanding that we exist as overlapping environments has been lost, and instead of recognizing ourselves as part of the landscape, we stand apart and view the world around us as "other". In a culture that discourages real solitude, art is quiet. When making art, with earth as my medium, I can sometimes sense the "rise and fall" Hawkes described. This body of work, Physical Map of the Earth, explores the unity of past and present, nature and humanity.
