CROSS CURRENT by Stacey Neff

Inspired by the hidden existence of aquatic biology and botany. A continued exploration of the relationships between growth and time, as are evident in nature. Intentionally blurring the lines between plant and animal life; I create animate forms. Suspended in their actions, such as, blooming, migrating or dividing. These lives remain mysteries of the deep and shrouded sea. The tender, graceful and vulnerable, lines are perfectly designed to coexist with the strength of immense tides. Diminutive amounts of light dictate both form and color. Crosscurrent allows the viewer to witness the well-kept secrets of the abyss. The physical creation process translates fluidly from organic growth into glasswork. I begin by deciding what type of form I intend to create. My desired form dictates the specific set up of glass on the end of the pipe. Variables include thickness, shape and heat. The glassblowing team works in a choreographed manner to stretch, bend and inflate the molten glass. Cooled rigid glass forms are laminated with layers of fiberglass cloth, resin and pigment. Metaphorically the set up is a seed encoded with information for a particular form and the choreographed blowing occurs as forces of nature.
